Charleston police arrested a second person they said was involved in the attempted shooting of two city police officers late last year.
On the morning of Dec. 30, officers said they smelled marijuana coming from a vehicle that passed their cruiser in an Ashley River Road parking lot. When the officers attempted a traffic stop on Carriage Lane, the front passenger, Brianna Sampson, 19, of North Charleston, fired several shots at the officers, authorities said.
Neither of the two officers was hit. They did not shoot back.
After the gunfire, the driver, Calvin Smith Jr., 22, of Charleston, along with two passengers, bailed out and fled, police said. The passengers were apprehended shortly after the pursuit. Sampson was jailed on two counts of attempted murder and various weapons charges. The rear passenger was not charged.
Smith had been on the run since his arrest Monday. He faces two counts of attempted murder and failure to stop for blue lights.
