For the first time, downtown will take part in March on Marijuana Day, a rally in support of the medical use of cannabis.
It will take place Saturday, May 2 at One City Plaza.
Emily McSherry, founder of Yeah That Cure is hosting.
McSherry said since she started using cannabidiol oil to treat her epilepsy, she’s gone down to having one seizure per month.
“Sometimes I would have eight in a week. Sometimes I would have eight in a day,” said McSherry.
CBD oil is a legal remedy with .3 percent THC
She’s hoping South Carolina can take it one step further.
“If CBD works for this, what other components, what other cannabinoids in the plant will treat other medical conditions and be able to and essentially save lives?” said McSherry.
A bill making its way through the Senate would allow marijuana to be grown and prescribed in South Carolina for certain illnesses.
“We have to start saying this is enough. There is a cure. There is a medicine. Instead, I am having to take medicines that have horrific side effects and put all kinds of man-made chemicals into my blood,” said McSherry.
Some said legalizing the drug would be dangerous.
“I have no reason to believe for a minute medical marijuana wouldn’t wind up in the hands of people who don’t really have these problems,” said Rich Jones.
Jones is the executive director of FAVOR (Faces and Voices of Recovery). The center helps individuals and families struggling with substance abuse. Jones takes a strong stance against legalizing medical marijuana.
“People would develop dependency over time just like any other drug,” said Jones.
McSherry encourages all medical marijuana critics to attend her rally.
“I wish every politician who had a say so in this vote could see the kind of people they would be voting for or against changing their lives,” said McSherry.
