Former Ocala abortion clinic owner James Scott Pendergraft IV pleaded guilty Tuesday in a South Carolina court to 10 drug charges.
The 60-year-old Orlando-based doctor was sentenced to five years of probation and fined a total of $26,342.25, according to South Carolina court records. He is also prohibited from ever applying for a South Carolina medical license.
Pendergraft’s charges are linked to a 2015 routine traffic stop, during which sheriff’s officers in South Carolina found drugs and surgical implements covered in blood and human tissue from abortions he had conducted. The local sheriff described him as a “traveling abortionist.” He was arrested and charged with six counts of possession of a controlled substance; one count each of possession of marijuana, narcotics and prescription medicine; and one count of manufacturing or possessing a controlled substance.
He was not licensed to practice medicine in South Carolina, but did not face charges in relation to that.
At the time of his arrest, Pendergraft owned three abortion clinics in central Florida — one in Ocala, two in Orlando — and a fourth in Fort Lauderdale.
