CHARLESTON — A Coles County jury deliberated just more than a half-hour before convicting a man of having marijuana he planned to sell.
The jury reached its verdict after hearing evidence that the defendant, Reginald X. Burpo, had marijuana in his vehicle and later admitted to police that he was selling the drug.
Burpo, 26, for whom court records list an address of 1812 12th St. Apt. B, Charleston, was charged with possession of a cannabis with intent to deliver after his arrest for allegedly planning to sell marijuana on March 6.
According to records in the case, officers with the East Central Illinois Task Force drug investigation unit and Mattoon police located and stopped Burpo’s vehicle because of a warrant from an earlier case.
The search that followed led to the discovery of just more than four ounces of marijuana and several hundred dollars in cash, which Burpo later admitted were both for drug sales, the records say.
The jury’s verdict came at the end of two-day trial
