STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — No one knows exactly what two young men were thinking when cops shot one of them after he turned toward officers with a gun in a wooded area in Charleston last year.
But for one of them, the bizarre episode culminated Tuesday with court officers leading him out of a St. George courtroom for a bus ride to Rikers Island where he’ll begin serving a one-year jail sentence.
Jonathan Derbyshire, 25, was sentenced under a plea agreement reached in November.
The defendant pleaded guilty then to third-degree weapon possession with respect to a Bushmaster semiautomatic rifle cops found at the scene.
Derbyshire and Patrick Allen, 25, were busted on Jan. 5, 2017, after police responded to a 1:10 a.m. call of shots fired in the vicinity of Androvette Street and Arthur Kill Road.
Officers shot and wounded Allen, who was wearing body armor at the time, said police.
Authorities allege Derbyshire fled into the woods when police responded to the report of shots fired.
