PATERSON – City police officers seized a loaded .40-caliber handgun from a 23-year-old man they allegedly saw make a drug deal in Paterson’s 5th Ward on Friday night, authorities said.
In addition to the gun, which was reported stolen in South Carolina, police said the suspect also was carrying cocaine and marijuana.
Jose R. Espinal-Henriquez of Paterson was charged with nine different narcotics and weapons offenses, police said. The arrest took place at 10 p.m. Friday near Market and East 18th streets, near New Roberto Clemente School, police said.
Paterson police officers Rene Alicea and Christopher Polonkay allegedly watched Pedro Cruz, 26, approach Espinal-Henriquez’ car and then make what seemed to be a drug exchange, according to a press release issued by city police director Jerry Speziale. The officers found the gun inside the waistband of Espinal-Henriquez’ pants, the director said.
