With the 2018 election filing period set to get underway on Monday, Jan. 8, rumors and pre-filings abound.
Huntington Mayor Steve Williams is denying one new year’s rumor. Sources insist Williams will resign as mayor if (when) he wins the May Democrat primary for Congress. These same folks say County Commissioner Bob Bailey, whose term is up in 2018, will be appointed to fill Williams’ remaining time as mayor.
That, in theory, would pull Bailey from a highly competitive re-election campaign, likely against current Republican Del. Kelli Sobonya.
Williams was adamant in his denial. “There is absolutely zero truth to this rumor,” he told me.
As noted last week, today, Sunday, Jan. 7, is the day state Republicans will choose a new chair for their party. That meeting of the state executive committee is scheduled to begin this morning at the South Charleston Holiday Inn.
If nothing else, members of the GOP have proven that they can fire verbal missiles with the best of them. National committeewoman Melody Potter,
