Pickens County Republicans applauded loudly Thursday night as state Sen. Tom Davis spoke about his efforts to legalize medical cannabis in South Carolina.
Answering a question from a veteran who served in Afghanistan, Davis said the legislation that he is pushing would be different from medical marijuana programs established in states like California and Colorado.
“I realize that we are a conservative state,” Davis told an audience of about 50 Republicans at Mutt’s BBQ in Easley. “What I want is a very regulated, tight-controlled market where doctors are the gatekeepers to providing medicine to those who need it.”
Davis, a Republican from Beaufort, said his proposed bill that would allow cannabis to be prescribed to people with cancer, glaucoma and other debilitating conditions “certainly doesn’t endear me to the law enforcement community, who I greatly, greatly respect.”
“But they are just wrong on this issue,” he said.
