The Senate Medical Marijuana Committee held a meeting in Greenville, SC to sort out the details surrounding CBD. Doctors in South Carolina can now legally prescribe cannabidiol (CBD), the non-psycho active part of marijuana plants to their patients as part of medical treatment. Cannabidiol is commonly administered in an oil form, however there is no legal system currently in place to make the cannabidiol oils available.
Sen. Tom Davis said, “Last year, it’s almost like we had the cart before the horse. We went ahead and allowed doctors to prescribe it to patients, but we really haven’t provided a means by which that drug can be available.” According to Davis that is the next step the committee is working on.
“Now, the next step since we’ve made it legal for doctors to prescribe it for patients, we have to come up with a methods by which the plant is grown and cultivated and extracted and dispensed here in South Carolina,” Davis said.
Thursday, the Senate Medical Affairs Medical Marijuana Study Committee met in Greenville in an auditorium at the ICAR Campus to go over the issue. A meeting in Florence on December 4 is scheduled for the same subject..
Lisa Clin, who came to speak to the committee in Greenville says making Cannabidiol oil available to her son is a life-saving decision. Her child was diagnosed with epilepsy when he was just 3 years old.
“All four medications that he is on are psychotropic, so the child I once knew is a child I no longer have,” she exclaimed, showing great concern over the prescription effects on her son.
The Study Committee stated that the primary interest of the Committee is not to approve marijuana for recreational use. The medical benefits are becoming a widely known for marijuana as a legitimate medicine. They are strictly looking at approval for medical issues such as PTSD, glaucoma, autism, Parkinson’s disease and more.
Passing the Cannabidiol (CBD) bill to cannabidiol oils for sick kids along with adults is a very progressive step for South Carolina, and approving medical marijuana will be a big move forward, however we need the horses to pull these carts.
