A man accused in a Christmas Day hijacking in North Carolina led Virginia State Police on a high-speed chase between Richmond and Spotsylvania County that ended in a shootout on Interstate 95 early Tuesday morning, police said.
Authorities charged Jerrell C. Richardson, 21, of South Carolina, with eluding police, assault on a police officer, possession of marijuana, driving without a license, reckless driving and driving without headlights, according to a news release from state police.
No troopers or drivers were injured in the more than three-hour ordeal. The suspect, who was shot during the gunfire exchange, was treated at Mary Washington Hospital for injuries not considered life-threatening before being released early Tuesday, the news release said.
Richardson is being held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail.
