Beaufort County, S.C. —
South Carolina Sen. Tom Davis (R-Beaufort) is preparing to introduce a bill that would allow doctors to prescribe medical marijuana in South Carolina.
Sen. Davis has been pushing for medical marijuana access for years, but he told WJCL News he thinks his new proposal could be the one to pass the statehouse.
“I spent the last three years driving around the state meeting with families, families of children with epilepsy, or cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy or neurological disorders, and I have seen firsthand how cannabis can change those lives,” Sen. Davis said.
He said he recognizes that South Carolina is a conservative state so any medical marijuana proposal will need to include strict regulations.
He said his proposal will include a seed-to-sale tracking system to ensure that medical marijuana is not used recreationally.
“There has to be a way we get the medicine in the hands of people who need it and at the same time put in the protections that guard against abuses,” Sen. Davis said.
