GREENWOOD, S.C. —
A mugshot of South Carolina’s most infamous killers has been circulating on social media, and WYFF News 4 looked into detention records to see specifically what Susan Smith has been doing since she was imprisoned for murdering her two young sons.
In October 1994, Smith, who was from Union, rolled her car into John D. Long Lake with her sons, Michael, 3, and Alexander, 14 months, inside. At first she claimed a black man had carjacked her vehicle, but on Nov. 3, 1994, she confessed she intentionally drowned her boys.

Smith was convicted and sentenced to life on July 22, 1995.
She was held in Graham Correctional Institution from 1995 to 2000, and has since been moved from Graham to Leath Correctional Institute in Greenwood County and Kirkland Correctional Institute in Columbia. Kirkland is a male facility, but she was transferred there once in 2008 and twice in 2017 for medical treatment. The records don’t indicate what type of treatment.
